the monument
The Charterhouse of Castilian Kingdom: ‘Santa María de El Paular’ Monastery was founded by Trastamara´s Royal House in 1390. It soon became, one of the most important monasteries in Spain, reflecting the social and economic power of the order of the Carthusians. Proof of that are the artistic treasures contained inside its walls such as the monumental altarpiece and the tabernacle from the baroque period.
Worn out due to harshness throughout the years, solid against the earthquake in 1755 and converted into Napoleon’s headquarters; it has also been subjected to the seizure of monastic lands and used a target for lightning. Nevertheless, it has survived the vicissitudes of history.
An inspiration for poets such as Jovellanos or Enrique de Mesa as well as an intellectual scene for the ‘Institución Libre de Enseñanza’, it has sheltered inside its walls each event from the chronicle of time, whose impressions have resulted in architectural work prodigies of style, from the Gothic years with mudejar reminiscences, through the Baroque period, to our days, which after a process of restoration, has regained all its splendor in harmony with the majestic landscape of blue sky, dense pine forests and imposing peaks that surround it.
